There is a tool in Microsoft Word that tells you what grade level a given document is written for. I believe it is called the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level tool. It uses the length of your words, the obscurity of your words and a variety of other factors to do this. It outputs the specific grade level your copy is written for.
Most of the time, search marketers should adjust their copy for the 5th grade level. This is because it just makes better copy, and it also uses more common terms. Therefore, this document will naturally target more popular terms, and will be more competitive. On the other hand, if you have a brand new site or one that is weak, you may want to target a higher grade level. This will put your document in more of a niche. It isn’t one niche keyword, but one niche document. Using this line of thinking the Kincaid Grade Level tool can be used to adjust for the competitiveness of a site or page. Stronger sites use the 5th grade level, and weaker sites use higher grade levels.
